EDGE LINES

Solid white edge lines are found on the side of a roadway.

This part of the road can have loose stones, be uneven, or drop off suddenly.

You can drive on or cross the white edge line if you're:

  • Avoiding an obstruction
  • Driving a slow-moving vehicle
  • Entering or exiting a road
  • Riding a bicycle
  • Stopping your vehicle
  • Edge filtering on a motorcycle.

REMEMBER

You can cross a continuous white edge line to overtake a vehicle indicating to turn right or to avoid an obstruction. You can also travel for up to 100m to enter or leave a road, turn at an intersection, to stop (if permitted) or to enter a special purpose lane or emergency lane.

A road with a yellow edge line on the left lane.

Yellow edge lines

These lines mean that you can’t park or stop on that part of the road.

If a vehicle is indicating right to turn, you can cross a continuous edge line to overtake.

ROAD ARROWS

Arrows

Lane arrows show the direction a vehicle must travel in that lane.

Some lanes may be multi-directional. If you're in a multi-directional lane, you can travel in any of the marked directions.

A vehicle is at a traffic intersection that has three lanes, each with an arrow showing the direction of travel of the lane.

Failure to follow arrow directions leads to crashes and fines!

Well Done.
